Is battling just the race to put people in a box they don't want to be in? The closer to reality the roast/insult is, the more effective it is - the ultimate roast being the one that makes your competitor reflect on who they really are and forget about making rhyming labels aimed at their counterpart; this manifests in a choke (see Anthony Mackie for detais). The above two battles seem to be a testament to that thesis.
