Stephen Chow = Social Commentary

Stephen Chow has been making insightful observations on Chinese culture in his movies for a while. In Shaolin Soccer, Chow deals with sinocentricism and the invasion of colonial cultures. In his latest movie he, allegedly, takes on class issues.
Some Sechuanese writes:

"Thus is the promising beginning to Steven Chow’s new movie, which has been dubbed by many as “China’s ET” and which has been hugely successful in mainland theaters. Though migrant workers have been portrayed in many other smaller (usually banned) Chinese movies, it is rare for them to be propped up in lead roles in mainland blockbusters. Could this be that rare popular movie that transcends its normal limits and become serious social commentary?"

I would respectfully assert that Chow has been making these types of half totally over-the-top half seriously-intense-social commentary flicks for a minute now. Going back to 1997's Lawyer, Lawyer - Chow breaks down the absurdity and corruption of the British colonial legal system - or his celebration of Chinese technological inoovation in Forbidden City Cop, your boy Stephen has been repping for his fam.

Anyway, I haven't seen the movie yet, it probably going to be awesome. Again some people are complaining that, "oh the alien solves all their problems." Well, guess what? It's a movie. If some incredible shit didn't happen, it would have been a documentary.

Bottom line: Chow is like Spielberg; doing big things. If you want further proof check the resume...bitch.
